Behaviour Supports

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners help people understand why a person with disability may use inappropriate, concerning, or unsafe behaviour which impacts upon themselves and others around them. Understanding what the person is communicating through their behaviour will help to develop positive strategies to better support them.

Our behaviour support service works with individuals, families and other groups within the participants lives to assist in better communication and understanding. The outcome of behaviour support is improving a person’s quality of life, ensuring their needs are being met and teaching them new skills and better ways to communicate to people and the community.

How do we provide Behaviour Support?

To start, we put together an assessment to help us understand why a participant is trying to communicate through different actions and using this behaviour. We spend time with the participant’s family or networks, and with the participant during their usual routine. Our suggestions will depend on the participant’s needs but there are many different strategies that may include skill training, communication training, changes to the home or environment or ways to respond safely when the behaviour is in use.

We also provide training to small groups in sexuality and relationships, social skills development and anger management.
